BROOKLYN CENTER
Hello, my name is Kiddy. My animal id is #12323. I am a desexed male gray tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as poor choice – too many animals already.
Kiddy is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). He appears fearful and does not seem to be thriving in the shelter environment. He attempts to hide upon approach and will display distance-increasing behavior during interactions. He does not currently allow any handling. There is no noted medical condition for Kiddy at this time.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/12/17 Lying in back of kennel with a flat body, ears pinned back. Makes eye contact and hisses as I lift the cage cover. He tenses his body as the bear-claw reaches towards him and gives it one hard swat before it can make contact with him. Does not currently allow petting. Needs more time to adjust. 11/13/17 Lying in back of kennel with a relaxed body, ears forward. Makes eye contact when spoken to. He eats the treats I place down next to him so I first click and reward to build an association, then I reward each time he comes forward and sniffs my hand. Not ready for petting yet, he squints his eyes and tilts his ears as I reach towards him, then bats at my hand (not breaking skin). More relaxed today but still needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Kiddy was tense, wary and crouched near the front of the kennel. He hisses when approached and starts breathing more rapidly.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Kiddy low growls, his ears bend flat and he remains hyper focused on the assessor’s movements.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Kiddy hisses then retreats to the back of the kennel.
Reaction to touch:: Kiddy’s tail pilo-erects, he arches his back and hisses when approached by the assessor. He seems very uncomfortable, quickly lunges and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kiddy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
