Brooklyn Center
Hello, my name is Kiara. My animal id is #8624. I am a desexed male black cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks i am about 6 years 1 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 02-Oct-2017, with the surrender reason stated as poor choice – too many animals already.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Kiara is at-risk with an experienced determination. He displays fearful behavior in the shelter and does not appear to be thriving. He has a low body posture upon approach and attempts to hide behind cage furnishings. He allows the assessor to pet him all over, but his ears tilt sideways and he appears very uncomfortable throughout the interaction.

Details on my behavior are…
KNOWN HISTORY: Kiara’s previous owner reports he is friendly with strangers that approach. Sometimes it might take a few minutes to get comfortable with people. He has not been around children or dogs before, but he lived in a house with 10 other cats and was very friendly with them. He was described as friendly, mellow and playful. He enjoys playing with stuffed toys and string. He is an indoor cat and tends to sleep anywhere he is comfortable. He is very litter box trained and never has accidents outside of it. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – very sweet but very tense and nervous and tried to flee. Easily handleable. Did well for all medical handling and procedures Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Kiara becomes alert and looks at the assessor with his ears tilted slightly sideways, Reaction when softly spoken to: Kiara lowers his head behind his blanket and averts his gaze. Reaction to cage door opening: Kiara becomes stiff and alert, and then lies flat against the ground. Reaction to touch: Kiara slowly leans forward to sniff the assessor’s hand when extended slowly, but he attempts to shift away from touch. He allows gentle strokes and lies down flat again with his ears pressed against his head. He allows all petting, but appears uncomfortable. Reaction to being picked up: Kiara is tense during pick up, but he tolerates handling and remains calm. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy Easy going Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful Potential challenges comments: Kiara has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and appears uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Experience Behavior Asilomar TM – Treatable-Manageable BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Kiara tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home and family. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
