Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Keshia was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She allowed some handling upon intake, but began to display distance-increasing behaviors when the counselor attempted to remove her flea collar. Reaction to assessor: Keshia was resting upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Keshia looks at the assessor and chirps, slowly rolling over on her back and stretching her paws. Reaction to cage door opening: Keshia becomes alert, looking at the opening and lip licking. Reaction to touch: Keshia was hesitant of contact, but pokes her head forward to sniff the assessor’s hand. She shifts away to avoid touch, but allows gentle petting with a slow approach. She becomes tense and focuses on the hand when touched on her back, however, and emits a quick meow. She whines one more time before patting the assessor’s hand multiple times and grumbling. She blinks afterwards and tucks her paw underneath her body. Behavior Determination: Experienced, No Children Keshia tolerates gentle petting, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to growl and swipe at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Keshia becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in a calm, quiet home with experienced cat parents and without children.
