KATE – A1062781
Safe - 1-27-2016 Brooklyn Rescue: Brooklyn Animal Action Please honor your pledges: http://brooklynanimalaction.org/donate/
**SAFE 01/27/16** Sweet KATE was gifted to her former owner, who kept her only until things got complicated around litterbox issues. Her former owner tried a few things but never tried taking her to a vet, deciding instead that bringing her to the shelter and letting her get killed was a jolly good “solution.” KATE earned wonderful volunteer comments and needs a FOSTER or ADOPTER, tonight! “A volunteer writes: Lovely little Kate is a shy girl. She doesn’t trust that the hand coming toward her is going to caress her. She needs to be coaxed into allowing you to pet her. It doesn’t seem as though she has been around people enough, or if she has, that she has been given enough affection. I didn’t try picking her up, but I did take some time to whisper to her and make her comfortable enough to allow me to pet her neck and chin. After only a minute, she was purring like a little love machine, so I think that she just needs time and space and coaxing to become a purr-fect companion.”

01/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
As per previous owner, Kate has lived with children of all ages, and is described as affectionate and playful, owner stated she plays gently. She has not been around cats or dogs. Her owner stated Kate has been urinating outside her litter box for the last six months and she scratches on furniture in the home. The owner stated she did have a vertical scratching post at home but she didn’t use it. Reaction to assessor: Kate was curled up in the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Kate makes eye contact with the assessor but she doesn’t come forward. Reaction to cage door opening: Kate is calm and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Kate sniffs the assessor’s hand and allows petting. Her movements are slow and her eyes are wide. Reaction to being picked up: Kate was calm, relaxed and had a soft body when held. Behavior Determination: Experience Kate tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. Kate’s previous owner reports that she was urinating outside the litter box and that she tried changing litter, adding more litter boxes but it did not help. We cannot be sure whether this behavior will continue in a different home environment, but we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. We also recommend that Kate be provided with numerous litter boxes throughout the house as she adjusts to her new living space. The extra boxes can be removed as she learns the space and successfully defecates in her main litter box. Kate is also reported to have a history of scratching furniture, and should go to a home that can safely cat-proof furniture in the home. We advise future adopters to make sure to provide mentally and physically stimulating toys to keep Kate occupied when left alone. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
