*** SAFE 03/04/17 *** Katara is a beautiful young kitty with striking gold eyes and an adorable petite face. Though she exhibited friendly behaviors upon intake, her stay here at BACC has led her to become more fearful, and we’d love nothing more than to place her in a calm, comfortable environment so she has time to unwind and let her true personality shine! Don’t turn away from this pretty girl when she has years ahead of her to grow and become part of her perfect forever family!

02/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Katara was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change 02/26/17 Pressed flatly against floor of cage in a rear corner, huge eyes. Not receptive to much interaction yet, uses distance-increasing behaviors to let me she know she’s not ready. Needs time to adjust. Checked back on her and she remains tense and wary, resisting touching. Added a Kuranda bed and a screen to one side of her kennel to give her a hiding spot; needs time to adjust. 02/27/17 Lying low in box under Kuranda, hissing, not receptive to interaction this morning. Screen cover was removed at some point, so I put back. 02/28/17 Has been using Kuranda at times, but hiding underneath this morning. Does seem to be eating well and using the box appropriately. Hisses and growls when slowly approached, pulling head back, not allowing me to touch her. When I offer some tuna she stays quiet, but won’t take from my hand and I can’t coax her forward with it. When I leave it near her and back away she does eat the fish. At times she seems curious, but isn’t comfortable enough yet for much interaction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful- Katara has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Placement with a New Hope partner- Katara is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
