05/15/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Kale was brought in without information on her behavior in her previous home. She was very nervous during intake and was trying to flee. She did, however, allow the counselor to collar her and take her picture. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Allows all handling, explores surrounding ENRICHMENT NOTES: 05/10/17 Sitting in litterbox with a low body, ears tilted. Makes eye contact when spoken to and raises her head. Tolerates petting along head and body, turning around to watch bear-claw as it passes along her body and hissing. Needs more time to adjust. 05/11/17 Lying down completely flat in her litter box. Hissed when I opened the door. Ears flatten. Seems stressed out. End of tail flickers. Closes eyes & tolerates petting briefly. Lip licks then lowers her head. 05/14/17 Lying in litterbox with a low body. Tolerates petting along head and body while licking lips and backing away. Then she will lean in against her litterbox slightly. Hisses, then rolls over a bit. She comes forward to sniff the treats I have in my hand and eats them after I close the kennel door. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Kale was looking around and sitting upright with her tail wrapped against her body. Reaction when softly spoken to: Kale appeared alert, but averts her gaze and lip licks. Reaction to cage door opening: Kale becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Kale slowly approaches the front with a low body to sniff the assessor’s hand. She was hesitant of contact, but allows gentle touch on her head. She focuses on the assessor’s hand when stroked along her back and pats the assessor’s hand (without nails) once and shifts away to avoid further contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot evaluate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Curious POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Gomes has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and appears uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Kale tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. We feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
