KAATERSKILL is a 5 month old kitten who needs a bit more socialization.
MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Kaaterskill. My animal id is #11516. I am a desexed female torbie kitten at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 months old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 02-Nov-2017.
Kaaterskill is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult-only determination). She appears under-socialized towards humans and is stressed in the care center. We recommend Kaaterskill go to a home that will allow Kaaterskill time to acclimate to her new surroundings. There are no known medical concerns for Kaaterskill at this time.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
When transferred to a kennel, Kaaterskill was tense with wide eyes and looked around as if trying to flee. When I reached towards her, she would quickly move across the cage to gain distance between us. I could scan (-) but not collar her.
Basic Information:: Kaaterskill’s finder has been feeding her and other stray cats, but his landlord told him to remove the cats.
How is this cat around other cats?: Kaaterskill doesn’t approach people or allow people to approach her, according to the finder. He lured her into a carrier with food.
Behavior Notes: Kaaterskill lived seemingly peacefully with other cats around.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Kaaterskill was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on their behavior history or tendencies in a home environment. Her finder has been feeding her and reports she will not approach people and does not allow people to approach her. She appeared to be peaceful with the other cats living outside. During intake, she was tense and had wide eyes. She would flee to the other side of her carrier when approached.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior -escape behavior, leaping, climbing.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Kaaterskill becomes alert and looks at the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Kaaterskill looks at the assessor with wide and dilated eyes. Her eyes dart from the assessor to her surroundings.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Kaaterskill becomes stiff and alert.
Reaction to touch:: Kaaterskill slowly sniffs the assessor’s hand and was hesitant of touch and shifts away, but she allows petting and remains tense. She meows softly and retreats to the opposite kennel, grumbling slightly, but will slowly blink at the assessor after.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Kitten socialization
Potential challenges comments:: Kaaterskill is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kaaterskill tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
