***SAFE 07/0817*** PLAYFUL JUNIPER IS HEALTHY AND NEEDS A RESCUE ANGEL TONIGHT! A poem by Juniper: “Hi! Hi! Hi! My name is Juniper! I’m full of gurrl power and not soft like a purr. I’m a roll and tumble kind of cat, cuddling is for dogs. I love to play, play, play all day long. When I take a break from playing, I like to be in the know. I’m curious about everything! Wherever the action is, I want to go. I’m not your average cat, but I do try to be humble. Come new friends to ACC and LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!” MUST RESERVE BY NOON!

Juniper A1112568 is at risk due to behavior. Juniper is a cat that prefers to play over receiving petting and attention. She is very active and enjoys playing with all kinds of toys, occasionally playing roughly using her nails and nipping. She doesn’t mind being pet, but she has a tendency to become overstimulated. She has been in the shelter environment for over a month and still displays playful behavior, however she is showing a lower tolerance to petting and attention. After brief petting, she begins to growl and shift away from further contact.

06/29/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Athletic VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Playful, Curious, Independent KNOWN HISTORY: Juniper was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 5/30/17- At the front again! Soft eyes and body, started rubbing against the bars on approach. Followed me from kennel to kennel when I walked past. Leaned and arched into pets, purred. Stayed at the front when door closed, resumed rubbing against and reaching through the bars. 06/22/17- Curious girl, will approach the front to interact. Very interested in tuna puree treats, licking it quickly when offered. Took some time to reach out with her paw to high five, but after a few repetitions she became consistent in offering high fives when seeing my hand. Started to add verbal cue, but ended training after about 10 minutes to keep her interested next training. 06/28/17- Sitting by the front, sniffing around as I approach. Tried to clicker train with new jerky treat, but she didn’t show much interest. Attempted to train with tuna puree after and she did a few high fives, but quickly became disinterested and just stared at my hand. Decided to just play with her with a pipecleaner wand toy. She was having a blast. Hopefully she would be more motivated next time. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Juniper remains neutral, sitting upright by the front during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Juniper engages and begins to slowly head bunt the hand. Reaction to touch: Juniper allows a brief touch on the head, but becomes agitated then paws and lightly nips, while she low growls and distance increases from the assessor’s hand. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Juniper solicits attention and tolerates some petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to pawing and nipping we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home. *** Juniper is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated and plays roughly. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Juniper becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance.
