03/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Jubilee was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/01/17 Extremely tense upon approach, becoming stiff and alert as I lift the cage cover. Her eyes dart around and she slowly adjusts her body in a crouching position, squeezing herself into the corner. She will sniff my hand when extended extremely slowly, but tries to inch away from touch. She accepts gentle petting, but flinches and looks very uncomfortable. Seemed to relax when I gave her some space, but will become tense when approached again. 03/02/17 Crouching at side of kennel that’s covered with a screen. Huge eyes, extremely tense, body poised to move quickly. Slowly extended my fingers but she slowly moved backwards, not sniffing or focusing on them; seems to be using peripheral vision for escape routes. Fearful, just wants to flee. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Jubilee was pressed up against the back wall of the kennel with her body lowered. Reaction when softly spoken to: Jubilee lies motionless and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Jubilee flinches, her eyes widen and she becomes alert. Reaction to touch: Jubilee seems very uncomfortable and looks around the kennel frantically for an exit. She tolerates petting with a very slow approach then slowly rises up, lip licks and shifts away. Her body feels very tense and she’s not receptive to much contact. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Jubilee has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentivesuch as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent- Jubilee tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his or her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
