Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: JJ was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on their behavior history or tendencies in a home environment. His finder reports he did not like to be picked up.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – hissed few times, tries to flee, easily examined in net
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/24/17 Lying in back of kennel, body tense. He hisses when spoken to and tolerates petting along his head and body while turning his head to watch the bear-claw, ears flattened and eyes wide. Face is tense. Not interested in treats today. Needs more time to adjust. Made diarrhea outside of his box. 12/26/17 Crouched in back of kennel, body tense and tail wrapped around body. Walks towards portal and continuously hisses when spoken to while maintaining eye contact. Doesn’t eat treats during interaction. I speak to him softly for a few moments – limited interaction due to stress. As I’m passing by his kennel later I see that his treats have been eaten. 01/02/18 Crouched on top of kuranda bed, body tense and tail wrapped around feet. Makes eye contact and hisses, backs and leans away to avoid touch when approached. Uncomfortable, needs more time to adjust. Saw him eating the treats I placed down a few minutes after the interaction has ended. 01/03/18 Hunched in back of kennel, body tense. He licks his lops and backs away, tail wrapping around his body as I open the kennel door. He growls when I place treats down next to him, then jumps on top of his kuranda bed and continues to growl while lowering his body. Maintains eye contact. Nervous. Needs time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: JJ was lying down by the back and appears tense upon approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: JJ focuses on the assessor and starts to breathe rapidly.
Reaction to cage door opening:: JJ hisses and becomes stiff and alert. He retreats to the other side of his kennel after.
Reaction to touch:: JJ hisses and growls as the assessor extends their hand. He shifts away to avoid contact, but allows petting on his body whenever he moves away. He tolerates petting and remains tense, but appears very uncomfortable and continues to hiss and growl.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: JJ has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and appears uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: JJ tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
