06/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Jethro was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Shy, allows exam ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/22/17 Lying in litter box with a flat body, tail wrapped around him. He tolerates petting along his head and body while turning his head to watch my hand, ears flat as he pulls his tail closer to his body and lifts his back leg. Needs more time to adjust. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Jethro was hiding in his cubby with his body curled up and his head lowered. Reaction when softly spoken to: Jethro arched his body, his ears bent flat and he hissed. Reaction to cage door opening: Jethro hissed then ran out the cubby and jumped on the perch. Reaction to touch: Jethro’s rises up, hisses and starts breathing rapidly when approached. He tolerates petting on his head with a very slow approach then quickly shifts away back into his cubby. He seems very uncomfortable and allows very limited handling. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Talkative CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Jethro has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Jethro tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
