06/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Jessica was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Timid ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/05/17 Lying pressed up against back of kennel wall with wide eyes. Tolerates petting along her head and body while tilting her ears and licking her lips. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Jessica was hiding in her litter box at the back of the cubby. Reaction when softly spoken to: Jessica becomes alert, her eyes widen and she doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Jessica remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Jessica is tense, wary of her surroundings and slowly inches away when the assessor extends his hand out. She sniffs and allows petting but seems a little uncomfortable. Her body feels tense, she lip licks when touched along her body and takes a few minutes to relax and warm up. She eventually leans in for cheek rubs and blinks slowly at the assessor. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Jessica has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Jessica may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
