SAFE 6/8/17 SHY, AFFECTIONATE, PLAYFUL AND FRIENDLY was how JAX was described by the owner who surrendered him to the shelter. JAX has some ear issues which should have a follow up visit with a vet. He is calm, friendly and allows all handling. Needs a new home! RESERVE BY NOON!!

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 05/31/2017 from NY 10026, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.

A1113750 Jax is At Risk for Experienced behavior determination; he appears to be uncomfortable in the shelter environment. He will lean and rub his cheeks against cage furnishings when coaxed, but may be uncomfortable with interaction when the door is opened. He tolerates gentle petting, but will begin to growl and keeps his distance.

05/31/17 13:06 Basic Information: Jax is a 8yr old male orange and white Domestic shorthair. He was a gift from an old friend and was kept in the same home for about 6 years but sadly the owner was unable to keep him. Socialization: Jax is described as shy for a few days but then friendly, respectful and relaxed around both strangers and children. Plays gentle and exuberant with both children and adults and also is very playful and respectful towards dogs and other cats. Behavior: He isn’t bothered by loud noises or storms and will scratch up furniture when at home. Will struggle during bath time, enjoys being brushed and isn’t bothered when being put in the carrier or being disturbed while sleeping. For a New Family to Know: Jax is described as confident, affectionate, playful, somewhat shy, assertive, independent and very mellow. He has a medium sized activity level, sits down like a person, will follow you around when home with you, likes playing with balls and has only been kept indoors. He sleeps in his own bed, eats Purina kitten wet food 2x a day, uses a hooded litter box with clumping litter and likes his wooden scratching post. Intake: Upon intake Jax allowed all handling, being collard and having his picture taken.

ACTIVITY LEVEL: Steady VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: an adult, cats and dogs Behavior toward strangers: shy for a few days but then friendly, respectful and relaxed Behavior toward children: shy for a few days but then friendly, respectful and relaxed Behavior toward cats: very playful and respectful Behavior toward dogs: very playful and respectful Bite or Scratch history: none Litter box training: yes Other notes: described as confident, affectionate, playful, somewhat shy, assertive, independent and very mellow. He has a medium sized activity level MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/31/17- Observed Behavior – calm, allow all handling ENRICHMENT NOTES: 6/1/17- Also diagnosed with conjunctivitis and URI. Curled up at back of cubby, asleep. Woke when door opened, hissed once, continued to lay in place. Sniffed assess-a-hand, then started to lean into pets, very quiet growling? After door closed, repeatedly came to the front, rubbed against the doo, and kneaded in place. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Jax remains crouched position at the back during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Jax gazes at the assessor, head pulled in, and tucked limbs. Reaction to touch: Maintains distance, squints during the stroke, but began to low growl and showed no interest to the touch. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Jax tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
