*** SAFE 03/09/18 *** Jasper is most likely a community cat who was found in a location where he can’t be returned. Unfortunately he’s quite stressed in the shelter environment and would benefit most from placement with a New Hope partner. JASPER is a one year old tux who is very upset at being in the shelter. He needs a home to decompress and relax. Please help him today.

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Jasper was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in hisprevious home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 02/27/18 Hissing and spitting in feral den.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 02/28/18 Lying in kennel with a tense body, face partially concealed behind box. Tolerates petting along head and body while flattening ears and maintaining eye contact. Hisses. Needs more time to adjust. 03/1/18 Lying beneath kuranda bed, concealed by towel. Sits up and backs away as I reach towards him and begins to growl, face tensing and ears flattening. Not interested in treats at the moment. Needs more time to adjust.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat

Reaction when softly spoken to:: Jasper grumbles from behind the blanket and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Jasper remains motionless.
Reaction to touch:: Jasper arches his back, his ears flatten and he hisses with wide, dilated eyes focused on the assessor. He hisses and displays distance increasing behaviors when approached and currently doesn’t allow any handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Jasper has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Jasper is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
