04/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: The previous owner reports that the cats have had very little socialization. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: In litterbox facing front of cage. Ears forward, eyes dilated, appears cautious. Very interested in wet food, pins ears slightly and hisses when touched. Able to take out of cage and allows all parts of exam, but oral exam. Immediately becomes defensive and tries to flee with any attempts to go near mouth. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage recently cleaned Reaction to assessor: Jack was crouched on his blanket with his tail wrapped around his body. Reaction when softly spoken to: Jack’s ears flatten and his eyes dart around when spoken to softly. Reaction to cage door opening: Jack lip licks and remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Jack hisses with and arched body and the hairs on his back start to pilo-erect. He shifts away when the assessor extends his hand out and currently doesn’t allow any contact even when approached slowly. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Jack has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Jack is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
