08/20/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Ivy was brought into our care center as a stray so we have no previous known history available. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – quiet and nervous, hunched down, hissing and spitting ENRICHMENT NOTES: 08/13/17 Lying towards front of kennel with a flat body, ears tilted and face tense. She hisses and spits as I reach towards her. She tolerates while lowering her body and turning head to watch my hand, eyes wide. 08/20/17 Lying in back of kennel with a low body. She looks around the room as I open the kennel door. Warms up and begins to purr as soon as my hand touches her head. She allows petting along her head and body, leaning in and continuing to purr. After a few moments of petting she stands up and stretches, coming forward with tail raised to allow more petting. Leans in and head-butts my hand, she remains relaxed and stays in the front of the kennel for the remainder of the session. Purring doesn’t stop. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Ivy is lying in the back of her kennel as the assessor approaches, body low. Reaction when softly spoken to: Ivy lifts her head when spoken to and makes eye contact. Reaction to cage door opening: Ivy remains in the back of her kennel as the cage door opens. Ears tilt slightly. Reaction to touch: Ivy begins to purr immediately when touched. She leans in to allow petting, then stretches and stands up. She then comes forward with continued petting, tail raised. Reaction to being picked up: Ivy remains relaxed and continues to purr as the assessor picks her up and holds her. She jumps back into the kennel after a few moments. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Affectionate, Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Kitten socialization Ivy is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes s/he has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques.
RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced cat parent Ivy was timid and fearful initially, however she has warmed up a lot during her stay in our care center and now allows all petting and handling. Nervous at first, she purrs and allows all petting once approached. Due to a bite incident that occurred with a staff member during her intake we recommend that Ivy goes to a home with experienced pet parents.
