05/25/17 12:54 Basic Info Hope is a 4 year old DSh whose owner was having issues with her behavior. Hope has not been to a vet before. Socialization Hope is fearful when strangers come over and hides until they leave. When children walk past her she will swat or hiss at them as well as strangers walking past her. She does not play. She has never been around other cats or dogs. She has never bitten a person before but has caught birds that come into the house. Behavior Hope does not have litter box issues but does scratch on furniture, her preffered fabric is leather. When being bathed she will struggle and swat to get away. When being held she will try to jump out of your arms. She struggles slightly when being put into a carrier. She has never had her nails trimmed. New Family Hope has a medium level of activity at home and rarely seeks attention. She is kept solely indoors and sleeps anywhere. She is fed dry food, thrice daily. She uses the litterbox well and has an uncovered litterbox with fresh step litter. She has never had a scratch post before. Intake Behavior Hope resisted being taken out of her carrier but once out she stayed crouched but allowed all handling for intake, scanning, collaring and photograph.

After door closed, eventually came to the front for more treats. 5/30/17 – At the front on approach, soft eyes and body. Started rubbing against and reaching through the bars on approach. Head-butted treats out of my hand, leaned and arched enthusiastically into pets, purred, almost fell over! EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Hope lays at the front, starts rubbing against the bars and rolling over. Reaction when softly spoken to: Hope continues to rub against the bars and roll over. Reaction to cage door opening: Hope remains calm and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Hope leans and arches into the stroke, purrs, and walks back and forth between the kennels. Reaction to being picked up: Hope sits calmly in the assessor’s arms and looks around. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Social, Easy going, Affectionate POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Overstimulation Hope is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Hope becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Average Hope interacts with the observer and appreciates attention, but she has a tendency to become easily overstimulated. Her behavior remains suitable for an adopter with an average amount of experience, provided the adopter is aware of these behaviors and is able to comfortably manage them. Though we believe this cat is displaying behaviors appropriate for new or experienced cat parents, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
