***SAFE 02/26/18*** 5-Month Old Gray/White Kitty Is A Fraidy Cat! Fearful in Shelter, HIBISCUS NEEDS YOU NOW!
Manhattan Center
Hello, my name is Hibiscus. My animal id is #20934. I am a male white kitten at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 17-Feb-2018.
Hibiscus is at risk for behavior reasons. Hibiscus is a very nervous and fearful cat, we understand both at and outside of the care center. Medically, we have no concerns for Hibiscus, who presents as a healthy cat.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
KNOWN HISTORY:: Hibiscus was brought in as a stray, so we don’t have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 2/17/18 Observed Behavior – will flee, examined with towel, removed top of carrier to get him out
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/18/18 Crouched on top of kuranda bed, eyes dilated, seemed really anxious. Sat up and turned away when door opened, very tense posture. Sniffed hand, then moved slowly around cage to avoid touch. Covered cage, left alone for now. 2/19/18 Seems more fearful today. Crouched on kuranda bed, eyes wide and dilated. Wouldn’t sniff assess-a-hand, quickly and repeatedly fled to other kennel to avoid touch, hunched low. 2/20/18 At the back, trying to hide behind kuranda bed. Stiff posture, eyes dilated. Pressed further into corner when door opened. Panicked when offered treats, tried to climb up, then fled to other kennel.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Hibiscus remains tense, standing on back legs facing the back wall of the cage.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Hibiscus becomes alert with eyes wide open, pupils dilated.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Hibiscus stiffens up in place, cautious with surroundings, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:: Hibiscus avoids contact, panicking back and forth from one side to the other cage. He does not allow the interaction to proceed.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Hibiscus is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
