**SAFE 03/30/16** NEW HOPE rescue is needed for GUS tonight, a one-year-old neutered boy with an improbable back story. Apparently this stunner “wandered into” someone’s house, because everyone leaves their doors wide open to random stray animals in early March, right? Ugh. Gus and the resident cat didn’t see eye to eye, which may or may not have anything to do with him being a “stray,” and is probably the true reason he would up at the shelter. Gus got a banged-up face and a DOH hold out of the deal, and tomorrow he will get a lethal injection to top it all off unless someone foster/adopts him through a NEW HOPE RESCUE group, tonight!

03/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gus was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. The finder reported he wandered into their home and got into an altercation with their cat. The finder placed Gus into a carrier and brought him to the care center. Gus had a tense body upon intake, but he allowed the counselor to handle him. However, he became defensive during his initial medical exam and displayed distance increasing behavior. The enrichment facilitator has reported him to hiss whenever someone approaches during his first few days in the care center, but when calm he allows gentle petting and leans slightly with touch. He is easily startled from noise and appears wary of the environment. Reaction to assessor: Gus was resting on top of his hidey den and looks at the assessor with relaxed eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Gus averts his gaze and his eyes wander to his surroundings. Reaction to cage door opening: Gus remains motionless, but hisses with sudden movements. Reaction to touch: Gus was very hesitant, but he sniffs the assessor’s hand and allows gentle petting with a slow approach. He leans into petting and arches his back. He appears to appreciate petting, but he remains tense and unsure. Behavior Determination: Experience No Child Gus tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in a calm, quiet home with experienced cat parents and without children.
