*** SAFE 01/07/18 *** Newsflash! Unneutered cat sprays!! Clearly this unintelligent owner did not care enough to have GREY fixed or to supervise their child around him! During GREY’s intake, he was pawing at the counselor for food….
Please help this one year old find a responsible and caring home tonight!
Brooklyn Center
Hello, my name is Grey. My animal id is #16694. I am a male gray cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 21-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- cannot handle smell or mess.
Grey is at risk due to behavior and medical, New Hope determination and an Upper Respiratory Infection. Grey will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. Grey is stressed in care center and while Grey will allow touch, after a bit of time becomes stressed and then will swat at handler.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/22/17 Lying down at the front of the kennel, slow blinks when approached. He stretches his paws out and inches forward when I called his name. Sniffs hand and accepts gentle petting on his head. He leans in for attention and gives head butts. Seems a little uncomfortable being pet along his body- he gently places his paw on my hand letting me know to stop. 12/24/17 Comes forward as I approach with tail raised and head-butts kennel door with force. He backs away slightly as I open the door and tolerates petting along his head while leaning in and vocalizing, then turning his head to watch my hand and vocalizing louder, ears flattening. Solicits attention but is uncomfortable with touch at this time. May be showing signs of petting induced aggression or may be unsure. Ate all treats given. Sweet boy, needs some time to adjust. 12/26/17 Runs to front of kennel with tail raised when spoken to, leaning and rubbing against kennel door while vocalizing. Vocalizations turn into stress meows as I continue to talk to him and his ears tilt. He backs away, tail dropping and ears remaining flattened as the cage door opens. He tolerates petting along his head and body while whipping his head back and stress meowing – raises paw. He loves treats so I click and reward each time he comes forward while remaining calm. Picks up on it fast – looks for treats with each click. Not ready for touch yet, needs more time to adjust. May be conflicted and uncomfortable or may be showing signs of petting induced aggression. 12/27/17 Social, relaxed body when approached. He vocalizes and rubs his body up against the cage furnishings. His body tenses up and he becomes focused on the assessor when he extends his hand forward. He appears conflicted- curious and tolerates brief petting on his head then quickly backs away, stress meows and raises paw up. Very food motivated- rewarded when he came forward and allowed petting. He seems unsure of his surroundings; needs more time to adjust. 12/28/17 Comes rushing to front of kennel as I approach, chirping and head-butting kennel door. He crouches down and backs away as the cage door opens, ears flattening and tail dropping down. Raises paw and squints eyes when I reach towards him in an attempt to pet him. He gobbles up the tuna offered so I click and reward each time he allows touch on his head or approaches me. Needs more time to adjust – unsure and conflicted. 12/29/17 He perks up when I call his name, then comes forward and rubs his body against the cage door. He meows then retreats to the back of the cage when the cage door opens. Relaxed and rubbing his body against the cage furnishings, but tenses up and becomes hyper focused when I approach him. His ears bend flat and his tail flicks when pet along his head. He tolerates attention briefly, then stress meows and raises his paw up as a warning.
Cage Condition:: Cage is recently cleaned
Reaction to assessor:: Grey was lying down and resting on his blanket near the back of the kennel.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Grey perks up when the assessor calls his name, then comes forward and rubs his body against the cage door.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Grey meows then retreats to the back of the cage.
Reaction to touch:: Grey was relaxed and rubbing his body against the cage furnishings, but tenses up and becomes hyper focused on the assessor when approached. His ears bend flat and his tail flicks when pet along his head. He tolerates attention briefly, then stress meows and raises his paw up as a warning.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty
CHARACTER TYPE: : Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Initially Grey solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he begins to stress meow and swats at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Grey becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Grey solicits attention and tolerates petting but may be assertively demanding of attention or may play roughly. Due to Grey showing discomfort with prolonged physical interactions, we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home.
