07/09/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Previously lived with: Adults and other cats. Behavior toward strangers: Owner described Greta as being somewhat shy around humans and people that she doesn’t know. Behavior toward cats: Owner described Greta as being playful with other kittens and cats in the home, Bite or Scratch history: No Litter box training: Greta is described by her previous owners as having moderately good litter box habits, occasional accidents using her open litterbox MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – docile EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Greta is sitting crouched in the back of her kennel as the assessor approaches. Reaction when softly spoken to: Greta tilts her ears back and makes eye contact when spoken to. Reaction to cage door opening: Greta backs away with tail between her legs as the cage door opens. Reaction to touch: Greta tolerates petting along her head and body while tense and trying to evade the assessor’s hand with a low body, tail down. Reaction to being picked up: Greta tolerates being held while trying to wriggle free. She jumps out of the assessor’s arms back into her kennel. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Kitten socialization Greta is a young cat that may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She may be apprehensive of people, but the behavior team believes she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. Please speak to an adoption counselor to learn more about socialization techniques. – Fearful Greta has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
RECCOMMENDATIONS – No young children Greta tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his/her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
