He sniffs the treats I place by him but isn’t yet comfortable enough to eat them in front of me. HE sniffs my hand and tolerates petting along g his head and body, tensing his body and leaning away slightly. Turns head to watch my hand with wide eyes – trues to sniff my hand. Curious and unsure. Needs more time to adjust. 07/25/17 Crouched in litter box, body lowered. Turns and makes eye contact, but doesn’t come forward when coaxed. Lip licks and becomes focused on my hand when I approach. He sniffs and tolerates petting on his head. His body twitches and he follows my hand as I pet him along his body. He seems uncomfortable and isn’t confident enough to come forward. Left some treats at the front & sprayed feliway. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Graceson has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may dislike certain types of handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
Inappropriate elimination – Graceson’s previous owners report that he was eliminating (urinating and defecating) outside the litter box for about 8 months. Graceson was seen by a veterinarian and has no known medical issues. The previous owners report adding litter boxes, moving them, cleaning daily but the inappropriate elimination behavior has continued. We advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only – Graceson tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. He may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
