04/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Gloria was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. Her finder reports she lived in a basement and enjoyed sitting on boxes. She allowed the finder to pick her up and place her into a carrier with little hesitation. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Do not like handling. Hissing. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cat is hiding under Reaction to assessor: Gloria was hiding underneath her paper upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Gloria does not respond. Reaction to cage door opening: Gloria remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Gloria hisses as the assessor removes the paper from over her. She looks around, tense, but will poke her head forward to sniff the assessor’s hand. She was hesitant of touch, but she accepts petting with a slow approach. She pushes up against the assessor’s hand after a moment, but is wary of her surroundings and will attempt to hide again. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot assess VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Curious POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Gloria has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may be uncomfortable with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, Adult Only Home – Gloria tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
