MANHATTAN CENTER
Hello, my name is Givenchy. My animal id is #21437. I am a male brown tabby kitten at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 22-Feb-2018.
Original Location: 10013
Givenchy is at risk for both medical and behavior reasons. Givenchy has been diagnosed with an Upper Respiratory Infection, which is contagious to other cats. Behaviorally, in the care center, Givenchy has been difficult to handle, swatting and hissing at attempts to approach, and otherwise remaining at the back of her kennel in a tense position.

Givenchy was not handled due to the behaviors described by the finder.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Givenchy was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 2/23/18 Observed Behavior: tense and hissing in carrier, would attempt to flee, once in net calm and still but would jump at any touch
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Givenchy is crouched at the back of the cage, looking at the assessor with dilated eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Givenchy continues to look at the assessor.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Givenchy flattens his ears and starts to hiss.
Reaction to touch:: Givenchy hisses and strikes the assess-a-hand.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other
Potential challenges comments:: Givenchy has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Please note that Givenchy is being treated for an upper respiratory infection at the time of the behavior assessment. This condition may affect some of the behaviors shown during evaluation.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Givenchy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
