05/22/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/22/17 14:57 Basic Info: Furgy A1112788 is a neutered male brown tabby & white DSH who was given to the owner by the neighbor at 2wks old and is being surrendered due to his unpredictable behavior. He was last seen by a veterinarian last year & currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Furgy is shy aggressive/plays roughly with strangers; he run at their feet/legs, pounces on them or he hides. He hasn’t been around other animals or children but was playful (rough), relaxed/affectionate with the adults at times. Furgy has bitten a couple of adults (once yesterday and another time a few weeks ago). Behavior: During car rides Furgy will meow. He hasn’t been disturbed while sleeping/resting, had his nails trimmed or been bathed. Furgy only likes to be pet/held when he comes to you for it and will try to avoid being placed into a carrier. For a New Family to Know: Furgy is described as friendly (when he wants to be), affectionate (when he wants to be), playful & quiet with medium-high activity level. When the owner is home Furgy follows them around. He’s an indoor cat that sleeps around the home, eats dry & canned Friskies cat food 3x a day, uses an uncovered litter box with clumping litter within and scratches on the couch but he does use a carpeted cat tower as a scratching post. Intake Behavior: Furgy allowed one quick pet on the head, then he began hissing, growling & swatting. Due to these behaviors he has to be transferred into a cat den and placed into a kennel with it’s side door open in case he wanted to come out to eat, look around or use his litter box.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish KNOWN HISTORY: Lived Indoors Behavior toward strangers: shy, plays rough Behavior toward children: playful (rough), relaxed/affectionate Other notes: described as friendly (when he wants to be), affectionate (when he wants to be), playful & quiet with medium-high activity level. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 5/23/17- In den, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Started hissing and deep growling when spoken to. Held strong eye contact throughout interaction, showed no interest in treats. 5/24/17- In den, facing out, eyes dilated. No response to door opening, offered treats, or assess-a-hand. Became extremely upset when den was moved, struck interior wall, started growling and lip licking. Seemed really scared. Later, poked head out of den and looked around, eyes still dilated, lip licking, quiet growling. Did this a few more times, then withdrew entirely and curled up inside, still growling. 5/25/17- In den again, peeking through holes, eyes fully dilated. Hissed when spoken to. Hissing increased and started growling when door opened. Reached out and struck assess-a-hand from inside den. 5/28/17- Still in den, started hissing and deep growling when cage cover lifted. Reached out and struck assess-a-hand, ate treats that managed to fall in den. 5/29/17- Still in den, definitely getting sick, lots of coughing, sneezing, and sniffling. Deep growl when cage cover lifted. Sneezed, then struck inside of den, startled? Hissed and started growling louder when offered treats. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Furgy remains hiding in the cat den during the approach. Reaction to cage door opening: Furgy began to hiss, crouched position in place. Reaction to touch: Furgy avoids contact, began to growl and swat at the assessor’s hand to stop the interaction. BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Furgy is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
