04/11/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Fiona was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. Her finder reports she displayed fearful behaviors and would attempt to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Attempts to flee. Hisses when cornered but no attempts to bite or scratch EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Fiona is hunched over and has a low body posture inside her litter box. Reaction when softly spoken to: Fiona focuses on the assessor, and then lowers her gaze. She blinks a few times after. Reaction to cage door opening: Fiona becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Fiona sniffs the assessor’s hand when placed in front of her, but she remains completely immobile during petting. Her body remains tense when stroked gently along her head and body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot determine VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Fiona has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and may try to flee with extended handling. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Fiona tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
