Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Finn was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Patient is hissing, and will bite. P.E. limited due to behavior during intake ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/13/17 At back of kennel, sitting half upright with a tense body. He tolerates petting briefly, backing away and flattening his ears before raisin his paw to swat the bear-claw and hissing. Needs more time to adjust. 06/14/17 At back of kennel with a low body and tilted ears. He tenses and backs away as the bear-claw reaches forward. Hisses as the bear-claw passes along his head and shoulders, turning his head to watch with wide eyes, ears flat and paw raised. Not interested in treats today. Needs more time to adjust. 06/15/17 Curled up tight in his litter box and low growls when you approach the kennel. Low body posture, tries to avoid eye contact. Seems very stressed, not open to interacting. Offered him some treats to coax him forward but had no luck. He backs away and displays distance increasing behaviors when you try and interact with him. I gave him a cat den and sprayed feliway. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Finn has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Finn is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
