FAILA – 21479
Safe - 3-4-2018 Manhattan Rescue: Feline Rescue of SI Please honor your pledges: http://felinerescueofstatenisland.org/donation/
***SAFE 03/04/18*** 6 year old FAILA is a neutered boy who was brought into the shelter. He is extremely upset and needs a home asap to decompress and relax. Faila came to us after his previous owner had to move into an assisted living facility and was unable to take Faila along. During his stay with us Faila has been very feisty and has not adjusted well to life in the shelter. He would do best in a quiet home where he can adjust at his own pace.

Faila is at risk for behavior reasons. Faila does not allow any physical contact and hisses, yowls, and strikes at the door when approached. Medically, we have no concerns for Faila, who presents as a healthy cat.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Faila was brought in as a stray so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 2/23/18 Behavior: Hissing, growling, try to bite and scratch during exam
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Faila lays on his bedding at the front, looking at the assessor with dilated eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Faila continues to look at the assessor, starts to grumble and lip lick.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Faila hisses, yowls, and strikes the cage door.
Reaction to touch:: Faila yowls and strikes the assessor hand, does not allow touch.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Faila has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Faila is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
