03/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Esmereldo was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was receptive to all handling during intake and did not display any signs of aggression. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Tense and nervous but then became vocal and attempted to flee during restraint, net used for portion of exam EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Esmereldo sits hunched in place and looks at the assessor with dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Esmereldo looks at the assessor, then looks away. Reaction to cage door opening: Esmereldo sits up and becomes alert. Reaction to touch: Esmereldo leans into pets along the head, then hisses when pet along the body. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy, Timid, Sweet POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Pet-induced aggression Initially Esmereldo solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he begins to hiss at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Esmereldo becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. – Fearful Esmereldo has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Esmereldo tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only
