03/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Emily Bronte was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Very fractious, hissing, growling, striking out; unable to handle awake ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/01/17 Very tense and wary, wide-eyed, crouching low in box, alert, focues intently on my movements, hisses at approach. not ready for much interaction. Gave some tuna. Initial med exam pending. 03/02/17 Fearful in this stressful environment, needs time to adjust. Added a screen to one side of her double kennel, sprayed Feliway. Hisses and recoils from attention. Shows signs that she’s curious about interaction, but needs to acclimate. Gave her food and water and treats and a plush catnip toy. Update: Spent maybe 10 minutes outside her kennel, sitting and speaking softy to her. She seemed to ease with this gentle, undemanding attention. Didn’t come forward, but her breathing eased, her eyes softened and she relaxed her body posture. I couldn’t coax her forward with treats or salmon paste, but she was curious. There’s potential here, but it will take some time. Replaced screen cover on the one side of her double kennel, hoping that would make it easier for her to eat and relax. Sprayed Feliway. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Emily Bronte was crouched over her litter box at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Emily Bronte is alert, remains motionless and she keeps her eyes focused on the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Emily Bronte remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Emily Bronte seems unsure, leans away and squints when the assessor extends his hand out. Her ears bend flat and she closes her eyes when touched on her head. She slowly gets used to contact, allows petting on her head with a gentle approach and leans in for cheek rubs. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Shy
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Emily Bronte has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only- Emily Bronte tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
