04/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Elliot was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Resting in back of kennel when approached, ears flat, growling. Swatted, hissed, and lunged forward when door opened, unable to remove from cage as he bites towel being used to pick him up. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/19/17 Lying tense with a low body behind bogus paper. Makes eye contact as I speak to him and ears flatten as I approach. He tolerates a few pets on his head with the bear-claw, eyes dilating as he backs away. Hissed after third pet. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 04/20/17 Sitting crouched in corner with a tense body. He backs away as I approach with the bear-claw, flattening his ears and taking a swat at it while giving a hard hiss. Is not interested in treats today. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. May be agitated because his kennel was just cleaned. 04/21/17 Still not open to interaction. Keeps to the back of the kennel with his tail wrapped around his body. Low body posture, eyes become focused when I start talking to him. Doesn’t break concentration, follows all my movements. Body arches, hairs along back pilo-erct when the door opens. Hisses and strikes with any sudden movement, currently doesn’t allow any handling. Seems very stressed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Elliot has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Elliot is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
