03/27/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Elf was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He hissed and growled during intake. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Hissing in carrier ENRICHMENT NOTES: 03/26/17 Behind shoreline cover, lying down flat on top of bed. Ears tilt when spoken to and he becomes alert when cage door opens, blinking. Allows brief touch on head before shifting away into his other kennel. Tries to avoid contact, mostly fearful and tries to hide. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Elf was resting, but lifts his head and looks at the assessor when approached and blinks. Reaction when softly spoken to: Elf focuses on the assessor, but his eyes remain almond-shaped. Reaction to cage door opening: Elf becomes stiff and alert. Reaction to touch: Elf lowers his entire body and tries to hide. He looks around his surroundings and shifts away to avoid contact. He allows brief touch on his body, but flees to the other side of his kennel and will continue to dodge the assessor’s hand. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Elf has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and tried to avoid handling as much as possible. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Placement with a New Hope partner – Elf is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
