Dusty used to largely be outdoors, but would probably love to spend his coming years inside a home, and behaviorally, Dusty has been assessed as being suitable even for a beginner cat home. Hello, my name is Dusty. My animal id is #15743. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years old. – P
I came into the shelter as a stray on 09-Dec-2017.
Dusty is at risk for medical reasons. Dusty is a geriatric man with hyperhtyroidism. He also is underweight and has some dental disease. Dusty used to largely be outdoors, but would probably love to spend his coming years inside a home, and behaviorally, Dusty has been assessed as being suitable even for a beginner cat home.

Neutered male Scan negative for a microchip Inserted during the initial # 981020025017911 About 7 to 8 years old OU=sunken in Nose= No discharge AU=waxy Teeth are stained Dehydrated Under weight Healthy appetite Drinking water Dewormed with Pyrantel Flea Treatment = Para Defense As of now no signs of URI As of now no V/S/C/D
DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 7-10 years based on dentition and weight loss Microchip noted on Intake? Scanned neg on intake – MC placed during LVT intake exam History : Outdoor cat who client has been feeding for the last few weeks; pt has been losing weight. Subjective: Alert, walks around exam table Observed Behavior – Allows all handling, seems very calm when held and face examined. Pt yowls a little when restrained for blood draw Objective QAR, estimated 5% dehydrated, BCS 3-4/9 with significant generalized muscle wasting EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Moderate tartar on PMs PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Soft, non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Male, neutered MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, hair coat needs to be groomed – several tufts coming out CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Normal externally Assessment: 1. Underweight, muscle wasting, reported weight loss, dehydration 2. Dental disease Prognosis: Fair-good Plan: Run CBC/chemistry 1088
CBC – all unremarkable. Hct 38.7, total protein 6.8 Chemistry – elevated ALT (234), elevated Na (170) TT4 – 9.1 A: Hyperthyroid P: 1. Methimazole 2.5 mg PO SID – methimazole will need to be continued indefinitely although the dose may change over time 2. Repeat T4, CBC and chemistry in 2 weeks; if T4 is not normal, increase methimazole to 2.5 mg PO BID 3. LRS 100 ml SQ SID x3 days 1088

Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
Dusty allowed me to pick him up and collar him. He leaned into pets and headbutted. He purred and tapped me with his paw when i came close to his kennel.

Basic Information:: Dusty is estimated to be about 8 years old. He was a community cat. He was brought in because one of his care takers suspects that he is sick.
Previously lived with:: 2 children, 2 adults, 5 dogs, numerous stray cats
How is this cat around strangers?: Around strangers, Dusty is friendly and outgoing and gentle when he plays with adults.
How is this cat around children?: Dusty has lived with children for 3 days and spent time with children age 2 and 7. With them he was relaxed and affectionate and gentle at plat.
How is this cat around other cats?: Dusty spent time with other stray cats and was friendly and playful. When he played he was exuberant.
How is this cat around dogs?: Dusty lived with 5 dogs for 3 days. All dogs were large breeds. With 2 of them he was relaxed and respectful. They sat and lay together. With 2 others, they were aggressive towards him, they would bark and lunge at him so he would hiss at them. With the 5th one he did not interact, and they ignored each other.
Behavior Notes: In car rides, Duty is relaxed. He is afraid of having his nails trimmed and will pull back. He enjoys having his coat brushed and being picked up. He isn’t bothered if he is placed in a carrier or disturbed while sleeping.
Bite history:: Dusty has never attempted to bite a person or animal while with his care taker.
Energy level/descriptors:: high
Medical Notes: Dusty is underweight.
For a New Family to Know: Dusty is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and quiet. The thing his care taken liked most is that he is affectionate. When in his care takers home for 3 days, Dusty followed him around. He likes to play with string and laser pointers. He was kept mostly outdoors.At night he slept on his care takers porch in a dog house. He ate both wet and dry Science diet ID food and Friskies. He is litter box trained and his liter was kept outside in the backyard. It was uncovered and he used clumping litter. He had a scratching post made from carpet and when he wasn’t using that he scratched on the walls or trees.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Observed Behavior – Allows all handling, seems very calm when held and face examined. Pt yowls a little when restrained for blood draw
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Dozing in cubby, lifted head when spoken to. Lay in place when door opened, soft eyes and body. Sniffed, then started eating offered treats. Paused briefly to lean into pets, purred, resumed eating. Went back to sleep when done.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Dusty immediately comes soliciting at the front of the cage.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Dusty remains soft in place.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Dusty remains standing at the front of the cage, relaxed body posture, soliciting attention.
Reaction to touch:: Dusty head bunts the assessor’s hand and appreciates petting on the head and body.
Reaction to being picked up:: Allows the pickup and remains calm.
