*** SAFE 12/17/17 *** DREYFUSS lived in a basement for his whole 7 years! Owner said they couldn’t interact with him….possibly because they didn’t try! DREYFUSS is very fearful and not social because of the fear. He will need an experienced cat purrson to work with him and help him to blossom. If you can help DREYFUSS, please contact the Help Desk at [email protected] to obtain rescue referrals.
Staten Island Center
Hello, my name is Dreyfus. My animal id is #14340. I am a desexed female black cat at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 21-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – too unsocial.
Dreyfus 14340 is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). She has allowed minimal handling the care center, quickly escalating to warning behaviors (growling, lunging) that have made him unsafe to remove from her kennel. Dreyfus does not have any medical concerns.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 5. Red
KNOWN HISTORY:: Due to the nature of the intake, we do not have a profile on Dreyfus. We understand from the previous owner Dreyfus lived in the owner’s basement for the majority or all of his life, and has never tolerated petting or handling.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: sedated for exam
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Dreyfus is laying behind his den hiding.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Dreyfus remains motionless behind his den.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Dreyfus quickly moves to the other side of his kennel. He makes eye contact with the assessor and opens his mouth.
Reaction to touch:: Dreyfus appears alert as he is approached with the fake assessor hand. As it gets closer to him, Dreyfus appears very nervous, he swats and attempts to scratch at the hand.
Reaction to being picked up:: Due to nature of the behavior assesment, assessor did not attempt to handle Dreyfus.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Dreyfus has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Dreyfus is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat / scratch is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
