04/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Doughnut was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Growling, lunging, tried to bite, unable to net. EVALUATION: 03/30/17 Lounging around at the back, looks very relaxed. Comes forward to greet when you approach his kennel. Sniffs then brushes his body against me for more attention. Nudges hand and seems to enjoys head rubs. Tail sways when rubbed along back. Not completely comfortable with this, can be a little grumpy. Pauses with his ears bent flat then whips around quickly. Relaxes after a couple of seconds then solicits attention. 04/01/17 Hears the sound of the treat bag opening & comes forward quickly. Not much of a surprise but she’s very treat motivate. Started clicker training her. Rewarded every time she allowed me to pet her. Update: She starts low growling and becomes reactive when she sees another cat. 04/04/17 Such a big and affectionate cat, constantly rubbing against the door. Perks up and comes over when she hears the treat bag. Clicker trained a little, rewarded every time he let me do a full body pet. Stopped before he became agitated. 04/05/17 She’s always waiting by the front to interact with me. Social and friendly. She sniffs my hand and accepts petting/ attention. Her tail twitches with full body petting and can get a little agitated. After a few soft passes she quickly whips around with her ears bent flat then hisses. It doesn’t take that long for her to relax. She’s a big girl and isn’t too comfortable being picked up. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Lively VOCAL: Somewhat chatty CHARACTER TYPE: Curious, Affectionate POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Uncomfortable with pick up – Doughnut did not appear to like being picked up during their behavior evaluation. Please keep in mind there are many reasons why a cat may be uncomfortable with this type of handling and that this may not necessarily translate into a home environment. We recommend any future home with children be counseled in respecting the cat’s space and for the family to use care when picking her up, especially while she is still adjusting to her new home.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Placement with a New Hope partner – Doughnut tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
