07/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Devoe was brought in as a stray, so there is no information on her behavior in her previous home. Her finder reports she was wandering in their back yard and appeared fearful of strangers. During intake, she attempted to flee and hissed when picked up. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Very fractious/scared, bit handler, urinated/defecated when handled, exam in net. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 06/23/17 Hiding inside her litter box, low body posture. Hisses and leans away upon approach. Tense and wary of contact. She shifts away and dodges the bear claw. 06/27/17 Hiding in box, fearful. Becomes alert as I shift the box around to get a look at her. Hisses when hand is extended and squeezes body onto the box, curling her tail tightly around her. Very uncomfortable and unsure, but tolerates petting and continues to hiss on occasion. 06/29/17 Curled up in litter box and hisses when cage door opens. She continues to hiss during petting, but just remains in place and accepts petting. Still seems very uncomfortable with interaction, but tolerates touch for the most part. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Devoe was sitting upright by the front, looking around with dilated eyes. Reaction when softly spoken to: Devoe focuses on the assessor and lip licks, alert. Reaction to cage door opening: Devoe retreats to the back and curls up by the corner. Reaction to touch: Devoe hisses and lowers her head in anticipation. She continues to hiss when touched, but stops hissing after a few strokes and tolerates gentle petting on her head and body. Her ears tilt sideways and her body remains tense. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Timid, Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Kitten Socialization – Devoe is a young cat who may not have had many interactions with humans from an early age. She appears apprehensive of people, but she has potential to warm up to people. Kittens less than 8 weeks of age can be socialized by almost anyone; however, kittens between 2-4 months may require more time and skill in order for them to be comfortable around people. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult only home – Devoe tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
