I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 09-Feb-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – not good with resident animals.
Zip Code From: 07481
Della is at risk for behavior reasons. Della is very fearful in the shelter, allowing minimal handling, and hissing and swatting in an attempt to to discourage attention. Medically, Della is somewhat overweight, but otherwise presents as a healthy cat.

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
When approached, while in her carrier, Della head butted her carrier and poked her head out. She sniffed my hand and backed away when I attempted to pet her. She went back into her carrier. She poked her head out a few times before coming out fully. When she came out she smelled me again and then a dog barked and she hissed and went back inside. She then headbutted her carrier again and came out and lunged towards me. She did not allow me to collar her. She growled while in her carrier and swatted.

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Della has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New hope only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Della is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
