04/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Deedee was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/19/17 Lying in litterbox with low body and ears flattened. Makes eye contact when I speak to her and breathing accelerates. She backs away as I approach and she hisses. She hisses again when I attempt to pet her on the head with the bear-claw, raising her paw and quickly retreating to the other side of the kennel. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 04/20/17 Lying in litterbox with a relaxed body and eyes closed, feet folded underneath her. She watches me as I approach and hisses softly when I reach out towards her. She retreats to the other side of the kennel before I can touch her as she licks her lips. I attempt touch one more time and she backs away, hissing. Not interested in further interaction today. Sprayed feliway. 04/21/17 Crouched in her litter box at the back of the kennel. Appears hesitant, doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. Looks around frantically, eyes dart around. Lip licks when I extended my hand. Tolerates petting/attention for a short amount of time before shifting away. Hisses, ears flatten, tail lowered. Not comfortable with a lot of attention. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful – Deedee has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced cat parent – Deedee tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
