*** SAFE 12/07/17 *** DEE DEE was surrendered by an elderly owner with dementia – who could not care for her. She is very upset and needs a new home to decompress. Dee Dee is only about a year old and is already spayed.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 25-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person health – going into care facility.

During intake I was not able to handle, pet and pick up Dee Dee. Dee Dee hissed and air swatted while attempting to get her out of her carrier. She also hissed and swatted while being scanned for a microchip.

Basic Information:: Dee Dee is a 1 year and half female, domestic short haired tortoiseshell cat. The previous owner had to surrender due to personal health issues.
If yes, Please elaborate:: Dee Dee does not have litter box issues but will go right outside the litter box if the litter box is not cleaned.
How is this cat around strangers?: Dee Dee is described to be friendly, outgoing with both strangers and adults. Dee Dee is also known to have a gentle and exuberant play style with both kids and adults.
How is this cat around children?: Dee Dee has been around kids between the ages 10-16 and is described as relaxed, affectionate and respectful.
How is this cat around other cats?: Dee Dee has never spent time with other cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: Dee Dee has never spent time with other dogs.
Behavior Notes: Dee Dee has previously scratched on sofas and chairs within the household.

For a New Family to Know: Dee Dee is described from the previous owners as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and assertive when playing. She enjoys sitting on a window sill and looking out for hours at a time. When people are home Dee Dee tends to stay in her favorite spot and will interact as she feels. Dee Dee enjoys playing soccer with any design of small balls that are available to her. Dee Dee is strictly an indoors cat and is known to sleep on the sofa at the end of the night. She eats dry food from fancy feast three times a day. Dee Dee is litter box trained and uses a uncovered box, she will go to the bathroom just outside the litter box if the box has not been cleaned. She is familiar with clumping litter. Dee Dee enjoys using vertical scratching post’s with rough rope on them.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 11/26 Observed Behavior – hisses and swats when approached, limited exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/26/17 Resting in middle of cage next to litter box, head down, dozing off. Became alert when door opened, whiskers forward, started hissing. Tapped assess-a-hand when attempted touch, then backed away. Sprayed thunderease. 11/27/17 In den on approach, head poking out, eyes dilated. Started hissing and lip licking when spoken to. Able to coax slowly out with treats, came a few steps to the front, then hissed again and retreated back to den. Treats not enough motivation to come all the way forward. Sprayed thunderase. 11/28/17 In den on approach, started hissing when spoken to. Poked head out, eyes dilated, sniffed assess-a-hand. Tolerated very brief pets, then hissed again, threatened to nip. Retreated back into den, then reached out and lightly tapped assess-a-hand. Sprayed thunderease. 11/29/17 Better today, by the front of the cage, exploring her surroundings. During approach she engages and sniffs the hand. She accepts the touch, but after a few strokes she becomes agitated and lightly hissed while gently pawing the hand to stop, but returns back to looking around, seems unsure.
Cage Condition:: Cage is neat
Reaction to assessor:: Dee Dee remains tense, hiding in the cat den during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Dee Dee peaks out from the den, soft eyes, ears erect and forward.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Dee Dee began to hiss and retreats back into the den.
Reaction to touch:: Dee Dee sniffs the assessor’s hand and briefly allows the touch on the head, but began to hiss. She seems unsure and while attempting to coax her she comes out half way, but remains cautious with her surroundings and quickly goes back into the den to hide.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Dee Dee may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
