03/02/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown ENRICHMENT NOTES: 02/28/17 Bee is sitting with Dee butt-to-butt in a rear corner of the kennel. Both are tense and wary; able to touch both but they are still uncomfortable with the touching. 03/02/17 Bee and Dee are back in a kennel together, Dee was rejected for S/N at Glendale; of the pair she is the more fearful. Although they tend to lie together, they’re on either ends of the kennel this morning. With a slow approach they allow touching all over, but are uncomfortable with it. Need time to adjust, have already endured a very stressful stay here. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage slightly re-arranged Reaction to assessor: Dee was curled up in her litter box at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Dee lifts her body up to make eye contact and doesn’t come forward when coaxed. Reaction to cage door opening: Dee shifts away to the other side of the kennel. Reaction to touch: Dee sits up, presses her body up against the back wall and seems very wary of her surroundings. She tolerates petting with a slow approach, has a tense/stiff body, seems very uncomfortable and is reluctant to come forward when coaxed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back, and another if applicable VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Dee has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only- Dee tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
