***SAFE 03/10/18 *** DA VINCI is a 20 lb cat whose owner surrendered to the shelter due to a bite incident. Da Vinci is extremely upset at being abandoned and needs a new home with an experienced cat purrson. He also should have some follow up vet care for weight loss.

Hello, my name is Da Vinci. My animal id is #21037. I am a desexed male gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 18-Feb-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.

Da Vinci is at risk for behavior reasons. Da Vinci is very fearful and unsociable in the care center and does not allow touch, hissing and swatting whenever attempts are made. Medically, Da Vinci is obese and should lose 7-12lbs to achieve a healthy body weight, but otherwise appears to be currently healthy.

DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: Adult – possibly 3-7 years Microchip noted on Intake? Scanned negative – MC placed during exam Microchip Number (If Applicable): History : Surrendered due to bite Subjective: Growling and hissing in the kennel Observed Behavior – Yowling, attacking the proffered Assess-A-Hand. Placed in Freeman net – pt began hissing, yowling, growling, lying on back and attacking the net with all four feet and his mouth. Biting the pole that the net goes on. I was able to do only the most minimal of exams. Evidence of Cruelty seen – None Evidence of Trauma seen – None Objective BAR, BCS 9/9 EENT: Eyes clear, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: Unable to perform PLN: Not palpated H/L: NSR, NMA, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Large, unable to palpate U/G: Male neutered MSI: Ambulatory x 4, no masses noted, healthy hair coat CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Did not palpate Assessment: Obese Prognosis: Fair Plan: Recommend weight loss of 7-12 lbs 1088

Upon intake, Da Vinci was hissing at counselor and swatting at door of carrier. Did not take picture or collar due to temperament.

Basic Information:: Da Vinci is a 4 year old, male, domestic shorthair cat. Previous owner got him from a friend 3 months ago and wants to surrender him due to him scratching her. She stated that she has never taken him to the cat and he has no health issues that she is aware of.
Previously lived with:: 1 adult and 2 children
How is this cat around strangers?: Da Vinci is relaxed and affectionate with strangers. He plays gently with adults.
How is this cat around children?: Da Vinci lived with two children ages 13 and 9 and he was tolerant of them . He did not play with the children.
How is this cat around other cats?: Da Vinci was not around other cats. behavior is unknown
How is this cat around dogs?: Da Vinci lived with a small breed dog and he was aggressive towards it and would try to scratch it. He did not play with him.
Behavior Notes: Da Vinci is described as scratching people and scratching furniture. He is relaxed during car rides. Previous owner has never given him a bath. He isn’t bothered when getting a nail trim and enjoys being brushed. He will struggle to get away when being picked up and put in carrier. He may swat when disturbed while sleeping.
Bite history:: Da Vinci has scratched his owner and drew blood on her right arm. She cleaned the wound at home.

Medical Notes: Da Vinci had no known health issues upon intake.
For a New Family to Know: Da Vinci is described as playful, mellow, independent cat. He has a medium activity level and likes wot meow for attention. He will sleep a lot and follow you around when you are home. He likes to play with wand toys that are covered in catnip. He is indoors only and likes to sleep on the sofa. He eats whole hearted healthy weight dry food 2 times a day. He loves temptations treats. Da Vinci is litter box trained and uses a hooded litter box with clumping litter. He did not have a scratching post.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 2/18/18 Subjective: Growling and hissing in the kennel
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 2/19/18 In den on approach, facing away. No response to door opening or being spoken to. Briefly tolerated touch, then flinched and started hissing and growling. Struck den wall when offered treats. Covered cage, left alone for now. 2/20/18 In den on approach, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Hissed quietly and swatted interior den wall when door opened. Repeatedly waved through den window when offered treats, but never actually hit assess-a-hand. 2/21/18 Still in den, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Started hissing when cage cover lifted. Continued hissing when door opened, struck interior den wall. Flinched when touched, struck assess-a-hand. 2/22/18 Still in den, head poking out, eyes fully dilated, ears sideways. Started hissing and deep growling when door opened. Struck assess-a-hand when offered treats, then withdrew fully into den. Stopped vocalizing after being played music for a while, but couldn’t coax out. 2/25/18 In den on approach, peeking through holes, eyes dilated. Started hissing and deep growling when cage cover lifted. Repeatedly struck den wall when door opened. Struck assess-a-hand when offered wet food. 2/26/18 Curled up resting in den, facing away. Started hissing when spoken to, then stood and turned around, peeking through holes with fully dilated eyes. After being spoken to for a while, lay down again, stopped hissing. Started hissing and growling again when door opened, repeatedly struck interior den wall. Reached out and struck assess-a-hand when offered treats. 2/27/18 Curled up resting in den, facing out window this time, tense, eyes fully dilated. Started hissing when cage cover lifted, leaned back out of sight. Reached out and struck assess-a-hand when offered treats, growled. 2/28/18 Hiding in the cat den, alert with eyes wide open. He does not allow any contact, hisses and attempts to swat out from the den holes.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Da Vinci remains tense, crouched position hiding in the cat den.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Da Vinci becomes alert with eyes wide open.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Da Vinci remains immobile in place.
Reaction to touch:: Da Vinci does not allow the touch, hisses at the assessor’s hand from inside the den.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Da Vinci is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
