KNOWN HISTORY:: Curry was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Walked out of carrier calmly then fled table
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/29/17 Lying in back of kennel with a tense body. She leans away from the bear-claw as it reaches towards her and tolerates petting along her head and body while flattening her ears and licking her lips. May be uncomfortable due to injury. Needs more time to adjust. Sprayed feliway. 11/30/17 At front of kennel, body hunched over and tense. Makes eye contact, body frozen. Retreats when cage door opens – distance increasing behaviors. Limited interaction due to stress and injury. Sprayed feliway.
Cage Condition:: Cage is re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Curry was curled up in her litter box with her tail wrapped around her body and wide eyes focused on the assessor.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Curry perks up and becomes alert. Her ears tilt forward, she keeps her eyes focused on the assessor but doesn’t come forward when coaxed.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Curry remains motionless.
Reaction to touch:: Curry’s ears bend flat and she tenses up when approached. She arches her back, swats then quickly darts forward trying to escape the kennel.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful
Potential challenges comments:: Curry has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Please note that this cat is being treated for a wound at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior. Curry is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
