01/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Cumin was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. His finder reported he was wandering around in their yard and was able to trap him. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Cumin was hiding inside of a den upon approach Reaction when softly spoken to: Cumin looks out from a peep hole, but remains inside of the den. Reaction to cage door opening: Cumin lowers his body inside of the den and remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Cumin retreats to the back of the den to avoid contact. He does not allow touch and will hiss and strike when petting was attempted. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 1/23/17 Recently moved downstairs and was hiding in feral den. 1/24/17 In feral den, couldn’t reach. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Cumin was scared and fled during exam, but he never struck out, hissed, scratched, or bit. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Unknown VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Fearful of people, Independent RECOMMENDATIONS: _x_ Placement with a New Hope partner – Cumin is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time. POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: _x_ Fearful – Cumin has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior when attempting to interact with him. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him/her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
