Able to approach and pet, but tense, tight body posture, doesn’t react much to the petting. Lying down flat against litter box, alert when approached. He sniffed my hand when extended slowly and was hesitant of contact, but once stroked gently on his head the first few times, he started to warm up. He leans in for cheek rubs, arches his back, and slowly shifts his body to a more comfortable position. He still seemed unsure of environment, but appears to appreciate petting and attention. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: No change Reaction to assessor: Croix was tense and curled up behind his litter box at the back of the kennel. Reaction when softly spoken to: Croix’s ears rotate, his whiskers fan out and his eyes are focused on the assessor’s movements. Reaction to cage door opening: Croix flinches and lowers his body Reaction to touch: Croix keeps his eyes fixated on the assessor’s hand and seems very wary of his environment. He lip licks when touched, seems a little uncomfortable and starts grumbling with prolonged interactions. He remains immobile throughout the interaction and doesn’t get up or come forward when coaxed. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Laid back, and another if applicable VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, choose another, and another
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: Fearful- Croix has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult home only- Croix tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to his new home and family at his own pace.
