COOKIE – 23742
Safe - 5-24-2018 Brooklyn
SAFE 5/24/18 COOKIE was recently adopted and now has been returned to the shelter. She needs a new furever home this time.
Cookie is as sweet as her name suggests! This lovely young tortie gal can initially appear shy, but she’s warmed up quite a bit at the Brooklyn Care Center and can be seen greeting people at the front of her kennel as they walk by. She’s shown potential signs of overstimulation during prolonged interactions, but she appears to definitely appreciate affection and deserves to find a loving forever home

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
05/15/18
Slightly timid, allows petting, never came to front of cage
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
03/27/18
Lying in litterbox, tail curled around body and eyes wide. Pupils are dilated. She tolerates petting along her head and body while remaining still and looking around the room. Alert and focused on environment. Not too responsive to petting yet, needs some time to adjust.
05/15/18
Lying in back of kennel, body neutral. Tolerates petting along head and body while turning head to smell my hand, pupils dilated. Steps forward with a low body. Curious but unsure, needs more time to adjust.
05/16/18
Crouched beneath kuranda bed, body and tail low and pupils dilated. Ears are forward. She steps forward cautiously as I place treats in front of her and click and reward each time she approaches me or solicits attention, and then each time she leans in for petting. Vocalizing softly and head-butting kennel door after interaction has ended. Doing better today!
05/17/18
Steps forward as I approach, ears forward. Vocalizes. Allows petting along head and body while leaning in, then whipping head back each time my hand passes along her lower back. Eats all treats given. Keeps whipping head back – seems like she may nip. Not an expression of aggression but more so a sign of overstimulation.
Cage Condition:
Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:
Cookie was relaxed and lying down near the front of the kennel, looking over at the assessor with soft eyes.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Cookie tilts her head, then comes forward and rubs up against the kennel door. Her tail quivers and her eyes dilate.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Cookie retreats to the other side of the kennel.
Reaction to touch:
Cookie sniffs the assessor’s hand, then rolls over on her side and gives gentle head butts. Her tail sways back and forth, she scent marks and allows petting all over. After a few minutes of attention she starts to get overstimulated, then grabs the assessor’s hand and nips with slight pressure.
Reaction to being picked up:
Cookie was calm, relaxed and allowed all handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Lively
VOCAL:
Quiet
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Overstimulation
Potential challenges comments:
Cookie is social and affectionate but appears to show signs of overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Cookie becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experience
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:
None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Cookie may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
