SAFE 3/22/18 A volunteer writes: Do you want to be constantly dazed and amazed by a cat that seems to have personality on steroids? You know you do. This is a big fluffy orange and white fluffer nutter who is acutely attuned to everything that’s going on in the room. Looking in one direction, she says, no, no, no, I don’t approve of those shenanigans at all. In another, she spies a volunteer paying attention to another cat, and scowls and says, do I really have to put up with that upstart over there? Walk within a foot of her kennel and she starts to twist and turn and roll over to get your attention. Paws out and pre-purring (purring before you even start petting), there is no way she is going to let you walk on by. You will learn pretty quickly that she wants to pet you, and not the other way around. Keep your hand stationary and it’s a lovefest. But if you think you are going to get to second base, no, no, no, she throws a little hissy fit, prima donna that she is, but quickly returns to her love affair with your hand. If she catches your eye wandering toward another cat, back she goes to twisting and turning because she’s not going to let you get away. She is hysterical.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
3/14/18 Observed Behavior – timid, hissing a little bit during examination
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
3/15/18
Came to the front on approach, soft eyes and body, looking around. Seemed a little wary of surroundings. Sniffed hand between bars, started growling quietly when spoken to. Hissed and swatted between bars when shown assess-a-hand, then lay down.
Cage Condition:
No change
Reaction to assessor:
Coo Coo remains neutral, resting on the cage ledge during the approach.
Reaction when softly spoken to:
Coo Coo becomes alert with eyes wide open, body remains soft.
Reaction to cage door opening:
Coo Coo growls while ears remain erect and forward.
Reaction to touch:
Coo Coo began to solicit attention, loose body with tail up and leans into the petting. However, after a few strokes she moderately nips the hand and swats to stop the interaction. When finished she seems to be conflicted and continues to seek attention.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:
Mellow
VOCAL:
Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE:
Curious
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:
Pet-induced aggression
Potential challenges comments:
Initially Coo Coo solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body she begins to growl, nip and swat at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Coo Coo becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
Experienced, adult only
Behavior Asilomar
TM – Treatable-Manageable
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:
Coo Coo may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home who understands this cat may need time to warm up to her new home and family at her own pace.
