Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Clover was brought in without information on his behavior in his previous home. He lived in a home with lots of other cats. He tolerates handling, but may attempt to flee. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Observed Behavior – Eyes wide, at front of carrier, hissing, growling, and striking. ENRICHMENT NOTES: 04/10/17 Low body and crouched towards back of kennel. Eyes widen and ears are flattened when approached – makes eye contact. Slow blinks when spoken to softly but remains focused on me with a tense body. Eyes followed me during the duration of the interaction. 04/11/17 Lying in back of kennel crouched with a low body. Eyes wide and makes eye contact when I approach. When I move my hand towards him to pet his head he backs up and hisses. 04/12/17 Lying in back of kennel with wide eyes. Makes eye contact when spoken to. Ears flatten as I approach, eyes showing their whites. Backs away as hand moves towards him. EVALUATION: Cage Condition: Cage is neat Reaction to assessor: Clover was lying down, focusing on the assessor with dilated eyes and ears tilted slightly. Reaction when softly spoken to: Clover continues to look at the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Clover becomes tense, but remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Clover remains completely still and tolerates gentle petting with a slow approach. After a few strokes, he slowly gets up and shifts to the other side of his kennel and wraps his tail tightly against his body. He will continue to allow petting, but he blinks and lip licks while looking around. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Cannot assess VOCAL: Quiet CHARACTER TYPE: Skittish, Independent POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: – Fearful – Clover has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur if a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. RECOMMENDATIONS: – Experienced, adult home only – Clover tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. We believe this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
