Hello, my name is Claudia. My animal id is #14492. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 24-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Claudia is at risk due to an Upper Respiratory Infection which is contagious to other cats. She will likely need in home care with a course of antibiotics. Due to fearful, distance increasing behavior (hissing, spitting) we recommend she be placed with a New Hope partner (New Hope Only determination.

Staff are unable to apply eye medications due to behavior but she is taking doxycycline well with food S/O -BAR, appears interactive and affectionate but history of being unpredictable -good appetite -mild to moderate nasal congestion -OU: mild blepharospasm, mucoserous discharge OD -appears eupnic and comfortable A URI Conjunctivitis, active but mild P d/c terramycin nebulization SID x 4 days

Upon intake, Claudia allowed pets on the head and allowed counselor to scruff her and pick her up out of the carrier. Claudia allowed to be collared and picture to be taken. Claudia also allowed counselor to pick her up and hold her for about a minute before being placed into her kennel.

Basic Information:: Claudia is a 1 year old female calico domestic long-haired cat. Claudia lived with previous owner for about 2 months and was surrendered because she was biting and scratching the owner and visitors. Claudia has no injuries or health issues and was last seen by a vet on November 20th, 2017.
If yes, Please elaborate:: Claudia will use the litter box to pee but will poop outside the litter box. Previous owner used scoop away litter and an uncovered litter box. Previous owner took Claudia to the vet and was told that she was having behavioral issues and she was a healthy cat. These accidents were happening daily and the previous owner has not changed the litter box or moved it’s location. Previous owner stated that there were no significant changes in the house that would have caused the behavior.
Previously lived with:: Claudia previously lived with one adult.
How is this cat around strangers?: Claudia will sometimes hide under the couch but the majority of the time will approach strangers and swat and hiss at them. Claudia will not allow strangers to pet her.
How is this cat around children?: Claudia previously interacted with a 3 year old child. Claudia is not playful and will swat when approached or when the child is too close to her.
How is this cat around other cats?: Claudia has not interacted with other cats.
How is this cat around dogs?: Claudia has not interacted with dogs.
Behavior Notes: Claudia often scratches and bites people. During car rides, Claudia is relaxed or sleeping. Claudia has never been given a bath but previous owner would try to clean her with wet wipes. Claudia would react by swatting, scratching, hissing and biting. Claudia will react the same if previous owner tried to brush her coat. Claudia struggles when being put into a carrier and will hiss, swat, and bite. Previous owner has never tried to disturb her as she rests.
Bite history:: Claudia has bitten and scratched previous owner and other people but has never behaved this way with other animals.

For a New Family to Know: Claudia is an assertive and fearful cat. When at home, Claudia tends to stay in a her favorite spot which is under the couch. Claudia was an indoors only cat and was being fed wet and dry food 3 times a day. Claudia is not litter box trained and would have accidents daily. Claudia had an uncovered litter box with scoop away litter. Claudia did not have a scratching post and previous owner never noticed her scratching on furniture.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: 11/26 Observed Behavior – hissing/swatting; used net for exam
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 11/26/17 In den on approach, came out when spoken to, eyes dilated, body held low. Became alert when neighboring cat started vocalizing, began to and deep growl in response. Came slowly to the front with some coaxing, repeatedly lifting paw as if to swat. Sprayed thunderease. 11/27/17 In den on approach, started growling when spoken to. Came out with some coaxing, eyes dilated, body held low, started eating dry food. Hissed and repeatedly swatted assess-a-hand when door opened, fled back into den. Sprayed thunderease.
Cage Condition:: No change
Reaction to assessor:: Claudia remains tense, crouched position hiding in the cat den.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Claudia becomes alert with eyes wide open.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Claudia remains immobile in place.
Reaction to touch:: Claudia avoids contact, hisses and spits at the assessor’s hand.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Claudia is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. She is stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
