***SAFE 10/28/17*** CINCO IS A LONG-TIMER KITTY! BEEN HERE SINCE SEPT 5TH. NOW HE MUST EXIT BY NOON!! WATCH VIDEO! Poor Cinco was adopted last year and now his owner has returned him to the shelter for a “pets conflict” after all this time. Cinco is very upset at being back in the one place he hoped he’d never see again. Cinco is 6 years old, already neutered and a big boy at 17 lbs. CINCO is social and affectionate and may get a bit overstimulated but he certainly loves attention – was rolling around and purring in his kennel. PLEASE RESERVE CINCO BY NOON!
BROOKLYN CENTER
**RETURN**
Hello, my name is Cinco. My animal id is #7931. I am a desexed male brown tabby cat at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 5 months 2 weeks old. – P
I came into the shelter as a data import – incoming on 01-Oct-2017.
Cinco 7931 is at risk for behavior concerns (Experience determination). His previous owner reports he had been pouncing on and scratching them, seemingly at random. He was initially fearful in the shelter environment and displayed distance-increasing behavior, but he has acclimated well to his caretakers. Although still focused on his surroundings, he accepts some petting and attention. When he’s had enough, he will place his paw on the assessor and will show discomfort. There is no noted medical condition for Cinco at this time.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
Behavior Determination: Experience
Details on my behavior are…
KNOWN HISTORY:: Lived Indoors Previously lived with: Adults and a young child Behavior toward strangers: Social and allows petting Behavior toward children: Recently has been pouncing and scratching Behavior toward cats: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Bite or Scratch history: Recently has been pouncing and scratching his owners Litter box training: Yes Other notes: He doesn’t mind being bathed, brushed or picked up.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:: Hissing, growling, swatting, lunging at front of cage
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 09/28/17 At front of kennel, reaching out towards me with soft paws. He remains in the front as I open the kennel door and allows petting along his head and body while leaning in. He peeks outside of the room and tries to jump out past me – want out of the kennel. When I lift him back inside he turns to bat at my hand, ears tilting, then retreats to the back of his kennel. Begins rolling around the back of his kennel after a few moments and comes forward to head-butt my hand. Allows further petting while leaning in with tail raised. Purrs. Allows petting for the remainder of the session. Did well today!
Cage Condition:: Cage is slightly re-arranged
Reaction to assessor:: Cinco was lying down and relaxed on top his kuranda bed.
Reaction when softly spoken to:: Cinco perks up then hops down and greets the assessor by the front of the kennel.
Reaction to cage door opening:: Cinco waits eagerly by the door to interact with the assessor
Reaction to touch:: Cinco is very focused on his surroundings and tries to leap out the cage but can easily be distracted. He leans in for attention, nuzzles against the assessor’s hand and allows petting all over. His tail sways back and forth throughout the interaction and he will occasionally focus on the assessor’s hand but doesn’t display any further reaction.
Reaction to being picked up:: Cinco was calm, relaxed and allows all handling.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Lively
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Affectionate,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Overstimulation
Potential challenges comments:: Cinco is social and affectionate but appears to show signs of overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Cinco becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Experience
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
RECOMMENDATIONS:: None
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Cinco interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.

A volunteer writes: Cinco is a shy cat, five years old and sitting in the back of his kennel, wondering how he got here. He must also be wondering how he can get himself noticed among all the other handsome tabbies and tuxies and calicos. All he has to do, though, is relax and let his inner kitty shine when someone does approach him, like I did. I just chatted with him a bit in front of his door, then opened it slowly and put my hand in for him to smell. Bingo! It was as if Cinco breathed a sigh of relief and then he could be the warm and lovely kitty that anyone would want to take home. He just needs that slow approach.
