Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cigar was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was receptive to handling upon intake, but started to hiss and growl during his initial medical exam. Reaction to assessor: Cigar was inside a den upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Cigar looks out from inside the den and begins to hiss and growl. Reaction to cage door opening: Cigar becomes stiff and alert, and backs away slightly, hissing. Reaction to touch: Cigar’s ears pin back and he focuses on the assessor’s hand. He attempts to shift away to avoid contact, striking the hand when petting was attempted. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Cigar is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
